Pavel Durov Warns of Growing Threat to Internet Freedom and Privacy

Telegram founder and CEO Pavel Durov has issued a powerful warning about the decline of internet freedom and rising online surveillance by governments around the world. In a message shared on his 41st birthday in October 2025, Durov expressed concern that the digital rights we take for granted today may soon disappear if urgent action is not taken.

According to Durov, there is “no reason to celebrate” as the internet increasingly becomes a tool of control, not freedom. He pointed to new regulations being introduced in regions like the United Kingdom, European Union, Australia, and Germany, which include measures such as mandatory digital identification, age verification systems, and even scanning of private messages.

Durov described these policies as dystopian, warning that they pose a serious threat to online privacy, free speech, and individual autonomy. He argued that these initiatives—often promoted in the name of safety or child protection—are being used to justify mass surveillance and could result in a future where personal freedoms are severely limited.

“If we don’t act now,” Durov stated, “we risk becoming the last generation to experience real digital freedom.”

The tech entrepreneur stressed that most people are unaware of how rapidly their digital rights are being eroded. He called for greater awareness and resistance against these changes, urging citizens and digital platforms to stand up for the core values of the open internet.

Durov’s comments reflect his long-standing commitment to user privacy and his opposition to backdoor access or government control over digital communication platforms. Telegram, which he founded, has consistently prioritized encryption and user data protection, making it a preferred choice for those concerned about online privacy.

As governments push forward with stricter digital regulations, Durov’s warning serves as a critical reminder of the importance of preserving internet freedom, protecting user rights, and resisting attempts to turn the internet into a space of total surveillance and control.
