Adani Power Leased 1,020–1,050 Acres in Bihar for ₹1/Year to Set Up 2,400 MW Thermal Plant

Adani Power has been leased approximately 1,020 to 1,050 acres of land in Pirpainti, Bhagalpur, Bihar, for just ₹1 per year for a 33-year term by the Bihar government, reportedly to set up a 2,400 MW thermal power plant.

Multiple credible news sources confirm that the lease involves a nominal annual rent — ₹1 per year — over 33 years for a large tract of agricultural land.

The total land area leased is listed as between 1,020 and 1,050 acres, which also includes nearly 1 million (10 lakh) mature fruit and hardwood trees, such as mango, litchi, and teak, raising environmental concerns.

The site is designated for a new 2,400 MW thermal power plant, with Adani Power investing an estimated $3 billion in the project.

There has been significant political controversy, with opposition parties, farmers, and local residents raising objections on the grounds of environmental impact, inadequate compensation, and potential coercion in the land acquisition process.

Allegations include claims that affected farmers were pressured into giving up land, and that compensation was uneven or insufficient.

State and company officials argue that the project will create thousands of jobs, bring investment to the region, and supply power to Bihar at a tariff of ₹6.075–₹6.75 per unit, though this is higher than rates in several other.
